Training for 16 years in
traditional Ryukyu - Shuri Te.

The Traditional Shuri Te Karate Do Classes at the Canberra - Shibu - branch dojo; are formally conducted in native Japanese and English. To date our traditional Dojo of Karate Do has continuously remained operating for the past 30 years in Canberra, where it is well known and respected as a most traditional school of Okinawan Karate Do; providing a high and spirited standard of instruction and achievement. Therefore preserving the cultural integrity and heritage for its members.

The traditional Canberra dojo of Takahashi-ha no Ryūkyū - Shuri-te Karate-do; was first established in 1985 by; Garry O'Connor - Hanshi our principal instructor. After he returned to Australia, and opened up the first traditional dojo in 1980 in South Australia, prior to this our school of traditional martial arts was established in New Zealand in 1962. The Hombu Dojo Japan, was established in 1953 by; O'Sensei Takahashi - 10th Dan Soke.

Today The Canberra Dojo is under the supervision of Istok Tanevski Sensei - Nidan, who is the certified Canberra Dojo-Cho; and the appointed representative in Canberra and New South Wales, of Garry O'Connor Hanshi - Judan - 10th Dan, The Principal Instructor - examiner for Oceania.

"Our website here can only go so far." So, please feel free to visit our traditional karate school - (Dojo) and observe some of the Okinawan Karate Do classes. Or better still, make an appointment to participate in "four free Introductory Lesson's," Just give us a call on one of the numbers listed below.

We sincerely invite and "make welcome new students," who wish to experience our traditional school of Karate Do. Being mindful, that there is a selective intake on a periodic basis for new members; our traditional Karate Do training is typically limited to small groups of dedicated students, where the focus is on each student's potential and skill attainment.

Our students are introduced to an effective and proven traditional training curriculum, where the focus is on developing a high personal and significant skill level; therefore respecting the etiquettes of traditional Karate Do. Our mission is to encourage a high level of skill from every student, by teaching meaningful and spirited traditional Okinawan Karate Do. We cannot promise you a "short cut," or a "quick way" to attaining your black belt, however we sincerely believe in demonstrating the upmost respect and purpose, as we share this profound art of Okinawan Karate Do with you.
